Coastal garden retreat.
Our clients, preparing for retirement, had just moved into a new home on an acre of land. However, the property posed some challenges: built on a sandy, salt-exposed bank, it required a solution that could combat coastal winds, prevent damage to the new timber floors, and be low maintenance. The owners wanted a primarily native garden with sweeping lawns that would survive on natural rainfall, with no watering system in place. Additionally, it needed to be bushfire-resistant.

After assessing the land, we decided that the key to the garden’s success would be curves—incorporating them in the lawn design to suit the client’s ride-on mower and soften the visual appeal of the large space. We also wanted to ensure that the garden required minimal maintenance, particularly to withstand harsh weather conditions and the risk of bushfires.

We strategically planned the layout around a ride-on mower’s turning radius, ensuring that paths, lawn, and garden areas flowed seamlessly. Native xeriscape plants, selected for their ability to thrive in the sandy conditions with little water, were chosen. Mulched paths were designed to encourage meandering walks through various “garden rooms,” making the space feel inviting and natural.
A total of 700 square metres of lawn was laid out, with areas dedicated to both recreation and fire safety. River stones were placed around the house to help form a fire-retardant zone. Succulents replaced native plants close to the house to further increase the fire-retardant barrier while adding texture and color to the space.

The garden quickly established itself, protecting the home from wind-blown sand while offering a lush, welcoming atmosphere. Years later, the owners enjoy a thriving, low-maintenance garden. The owners now spend countless hours in their serene outdoor space, often receiving praise for how established and beautiful the garden looks despite its relatively short life.
Good planning, proper plant selection, and a flexible, practical design approach ensured that the garden was a lasting success, showcasing how thoughtful design can turn a challenging space into a beautiful retreat.
